Lunessence Winery & Vineyard honours a commitment to crafting fine wines which showcase the unique terroir of the Okanagan Valley. We believe in sustainable, environmentally sensitive viticulture, respecting the vineyard as a living and varied ecosystem. Each bottle is a proud expression of the earth it came from. Both in the vineyard and in the winery classical music reverberates. At Lunessence, it is our belief that exposure to classical music helps produce well-balanced wines.
Located in beautiful Summerland, BC, the winery overlooks Switchback Vineyard, an organic site that is also home to roaming sheep and chickens. Okanagan Crush Pad crafts wines that are symbolic of the region's unique high mountain/northern desert setting which has an intensely hot, short growing season with hallmark cool evenings. The winery is the first in Canada to extensively use concrete tanks and wines that are fermented and aged in concrete carry the Raised in Concrete™ designation. Visitors to the guest center, built right into the heart of the production facility, get a rare glance into the art of winemaking.
Sage Hills Vineyard began to take shape in 2006 when our family, after an exhaustive two-year search for the perfect grape-growing land (that included parts of Washington, Oregon, the Gulf Islands and the eastern shore of Vancouver Island) bought a 11 acre Farm in Summerland, BC. We began to build our home and reshape the old peach, plum and apricot orchard into land suitable for grapes. Over 3,500 truckloads of undisturbed soil from the edge of Okanagan Lake were brought in to terraform the land. This soil saw the light of day after the last ice age around 25,000 years ago. After much consultation with a French viticulturist and a local organic grape-grower, we were advised to plant Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir on our site. These varietals were chosen because of Summerland’s temperate microclimate and because the estate’s soil is particularly well-suited to these three varieties. After all, “If you are to make great wines, you must first grow the right grapes in the proper location.” Rick Thrussell organic grape grower. In 2013, we added a Syrah and Syrah Rosé with organic grapes grown on a two-acre site just north of Oliver. Sage Hills is now producing our fourth vintages of our premium, small-lot, single vineyard wines from 100% organically grown, Salmon-Safe certified grapes. The Thrussell family invites you to come visit our vineyard and see the difference that commitment to quality and environment make in the style and character of our outstanding wines.
