Harvest is an exciting time of year in the vineyard, but there are a few important steps that need to happen before you can enjoy that delicious glass of BC local wine. Test your harvest knowledge below.
Before grapes can be harvested, they go through a key growth period, veraison is where the grapes transform from small green berries into mature hues, greenish-yellow for some white varieties to red, purple or almost black for red varieties.
Once harvest begins the wineries are in full swing, picking, crushing and destemming to break the skins open, exposing the juice and pulp.
The winemaker’s best friend is a tool known as a wine thief. This is a tube-shaped tool that is 12-24 inches long and is used at various stages of the wine making process to test and sample the developing wine.
