Wine BC 2030
Since its launch in September 2018, the BC Wine Institute has worked diligently with the industry to develop Wine BC 2030 – the Long-term Strategic Plan for BC wine. The final plan will outline a synchronized strategy for all areas of the industry to adopt, and to be used as a reference point and baseline for decision-making over the next ten years. This high level initiative is focused and tailored to the strengths of the region as a whole, drawing from the findings and recommendations generated from the BC Wine Industry Scoping Project (Spring 2018) and the additional input gathered through working groups, townhall meetings, webinars, and discussions with individual stakeholders over the six-month duration of the project.
The final Wine BC 2030 Strategic Plan structure and content – the strategic vision and pillars, concrete goals, implementation and evaluation tactics, and deadlines – will be presented in detail to the industry at the BC Wine Industry Insight Conference on March 12, 2019.

How to make sense of big data for BC Wine.
It’s been said that data scientists have the “sexiest job of the 21st century.” Which is all well and good, but what does that mean for wine? In this session, Cathy Huyghe provides some insight specific to the BC wine community. Using her experience as a journalist for Inc and Forbes (where she wrote about Okanagan wine), and as CEO of Enolytics (which provides big data services to the wine industry), Huyghe will drive us through different layers of data applied to BC wine. She starts with the traditional role of journalism and how data analysis is used to tell the story of BC wine. She then expands out to Enolytics’ ecosystem of data partners, homing in on two local partners (Quini and the Global Wine Database) that focus on BC and Canada for the wine-informed consumer. Finally, she expands even further out to social media universally to explore how the everyday consumer engages around BC wine. This presentation offers insights that are directly relevant to the BC community, and opens some windows of possibility for how it can help to grow the industry.

On October 17, 2018, Canada legalized recreational adult-use cannabis. The impact of legal weed has created a significant response in the beverage alcohol industry, where there are concerns about whether cannabis will eat into the market share for alcohol. This presentation will discuss the overlap in wine drinking occasions and cannabis consumption, and what the early data suggests the impact of cannabis might have on Canada’s wine industry.
