Golden Mile Slopes WIne Country
Golden Mile Slopes Wine region
A south Okanagan gem with sun-drenched vineyards, terroir-driven wine, and sweeping vistas.
Situated south of Oliver, the Wine Capital of Canada, the sun-drenched Golden Mile Slopes beckon with wine, food, and open-air adventure beneath wide desert skies. Perched on the slopes above the Okanagan River in Canada’s only pocket desert, the sub-region includes vineyards near Deadman Lake, a kettle lake formed when a massive block of ice broke off a retreating glacier.
Enjoy intimate tasting experiences and hidden gems off the main wine routes. Explore nearby trails or visit the summit of Mount Kobau, a commanding peak that overlooks wine country. Take your tastings to the next level with winemakers’ dinners, vino-themed events, and divine culinary experiences.
Winds from Lake to Mountain
As the southernmost sub-region in the Okanagan Valley, the Golden Mile Slopes area basks in abundant sunshine (up to 2,000 hours per year). The hot, arid desert climate provides long sun exposure, but nearby Mount Kobau offers essential afternoon shade—a balance between the extremes. The down-slope winds from this local peak, along with cooling breezes from Osoyoos Lake and the river, help protect the vines and create balanced growing conditions.
Sands of Time
Quite literally shaped by the sands of time, the soils of Golden Mile Slopes are a layered legacy of ancient glaciers and long-vanished streams. Coarse and textured, with elements of gravel, silt, stone, and sand, these well-draining soils support hardy vines. The result? Fruit with pronounced minerality and a deep reflection of the land.
