East Kelowna Slopes WIne Country

East Kelowna Slopes Wine region

Cool lake breezes drift over BC’s oldest operating vineyards on the sun-soaked hillsides above Kelowna.

Looking up at the constellation of vineyards climbing the sloped banks of Okanagan Lake, it’s hard to imagine the humble beginnings of grape growing in this region. When horticulturist J.W. Hughes planted the first vines in 1927, he likely couldn’t have envisioned the Okanagan Valley becoming a major player on the world wine stage. East Kelowna may be home to some of the oldest vineyards in the province, but tradition here is far from conventional. Wine tasting comes in many forms—and with plenty of personality—from an old 1929 apple packing house to a sleek, modern estate with gravity-fed winemaking.

Each winery visit brings its own charm, whether it be garden picnics to immersive arts and cultural experiences. Beyond the vines, the greater Kelowna area buzzes with activity, from lakefront adventures to cycling and golf. The Myra Canyon Trail, a must-do day trip, leads you over 18 historic trestle bridges and through two dramatic tunnels carved into the mountainside.

  • East Kelowna is a beacon for refined reds and citrus-forward whites. The moderating temperatures are ideal for cool-climate grapes, and the unique microclimate helps develop a distinct mouthfeel on the palate. Pinot Noirs crafted here are light, elegant, and earthy, while Chardonnay showcases crisp acidity and a touch of minerality. With deep roots in the region, winemakers honour tradition while continuing to innovate with small-batch and experimental varieties.

Lakeshore Breezes

Tucked into the terraced slopes above Okanagan Lake, East Kelowna enjoys a dynamic microclimate where hot, dry summers meet cool winters and evenings. This area sees some of the lowest rainfall and humidity levels of BC’s wine regions. The lake cools temperatures and extends the ripening season, creating ideal conditions for the fruit. With vineyards rising up to 550m overlooking Mission Creek, this gently sloped terrain enjoys excellent air drainage—key to the long, slow growing season that gives East Kelowna wines their elegance.

Volcanic, Glacial Soils

Vineyards in East Kelowna are mostly planted on gentle, northwest-facing slopes with soils comprised of gravel and sand left behind by ancient glaciers and streams. In lower areas below 450 meters, the soil includes old lakebed deposits, while some northern spots have a mix of stream-deposited and lakebed soils layered together.
