Sustainability
Behind every glass is a commitment to stewardship, innovative technology, and community values.
For BC winemakers, local roots run deeper than the vines. From sustainable growing practices to low-impact production, viticulturists are shaping a future rooted in stewardship. By harnessing the synergy between climate, soil, and grape variety, BC vineyards craft quality wines with purpose. Across the province, winemakers prove that sustainability isn’t just a trend, it’s the foundation of a thriving and resilient wine community.
What Makes BC Wine Sustainable?
Sustainability comes naturally to BC wine. The province’s nine wine regions are well-suited to sustainable farming, thanks to a dry, sunny climate with low humidity, limited rainfall, and the natural benefits of hot summers and cold winters.
Across the regions, vineyards are guided by socially responsible practices, ranging from organic farming and low-intervention winemaking to energy-efficient cellars. As caretakers of the land, winemakers follow organic and biodynamic standards. Farming with care means selecting resilient, high-quality grape varietals that reflect the land and produce terroir-driven wines with the bright natural acidity BC is known for. Responsible winemaking also supports thriving local economies through fair employment, local partnerships, and inclusive tourism.
Sustainable Winegrowing British Columbia (SWBC) Certification
The winemaking community in BC is a tight-knit and collaborative one. Sustainable Winegrowing British Columbia (SWBC) is a voluntary certification program designed specifically for BC’s unique winegrowing conditions. A project of the BC Wine Grape Council, SWBC gathers global best practices and provides resources to help members improve their sustainable practices. Through certification, BC wineries clearly demonstrate their commitment to the safety and wellbeing of their employees, the environment, biodiversity, and climate change initiatives. You can look for the SWBC logo on wine labels and websites of certified wineries.
