BC WINE INDUSTRY OFFERS SUPPORT TO AUSTRALIA

January 16, 2020 / by: Wines of British Columbia

For Immediate Release
January 16, 2020

BRITISH COLUMBIA – In British Columbia, we are no strangers to wildfires, however the destruction that has hit Australia recently is absolutely devastating. On behalf of the BC Wine Industry, we would like to offer our support to our colleagues in Australia.

” Regardless of where it occurs, when faced with a natural disaster of this magnitude it’s more important than ever for our industry to come together and support our wine growing peers,” remarks Miles Prodan, President & CEO of the BC Wine Institute. “We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone on the front lines who are working tirelessly to help those in need and bring the fires under control.”

Many of our members have close ties to the wine industry in Australia, having family there or having worked in the industry. “Growing up in New South Wales and starting out my wine career in Australia, it’s heart-wrenching to see the devastation this is causing. I think I speak for our entire industry when I say that our hearts go out to everyone who has been impacted by the fires,” says Ben Bryant, Chief Winemaker, Mission Hill Family Estate Winery.

The BC Wine Institute is highlighting relief efforts where contributions can be made to help the farmers, owners and residents of the affected areas, and is encouraging fellow BC wineries to support our colleagues in any way possible. From all of your Canadian allies, stay strong Australia – our thoughts are with you.

Here’s how you can help:
*  Australian Red Cross
* Salvation Army Disaster Appeal
*  Adelaide Hills Wine Region Fire Appeal
* Wires Wildlife Emergency Appeal
*  The Saint Vincent de Paul Society
* The Community Enterprise Foundation gives you a choice of where you’d like your donation to go.
* GoFundMe campaigns dedicated to Australian fire relief and rescue.
